ARTIST BIO

Anael Sun is a multi-faceted performing artist in the Los Angeles area, who always endeavors to tell a personal narrative through art and performance. Leaving powerful impressions through numerous solo and collaborative projects, Sun breaks through their field with a fresh, brutal take. As a nonbinary lesbian, they seek to represent their community and tell stories through as queer a lens as possible.

A lover of all things avant-garde and strange, Sun exists on the intersectional planes of the ephemeral and the realistic, showcased in their whimsical designs and performances. Forever obsessed with clowns, faeries, and the things that hide under our beds at night, they bring these beautiful terrors to life- whether that be through his acting, costume design, or music.

Their recent credits include: Celeste (The Artificial Woman, UCSC circa 2022), a quirky lesbian restauranteur in 1910s Vienna; Clarence Daley, a nonbinary aspiring architect in award winning sci-fi thriller short film Mind Over Matter (directed by Anysia Deak circa 2022); Albryn Al'Amin in Disputes and Demurrals (Zoom circa 2020); Bloom (directed by Celene Curlee circa 2019); Rushes (directed by Saul Ryers circa 2019);

"RANDOM WITH A PURPOSE: RE"

Sun designed the costumes for three separate numbers in this show, including Re:framing, Re:heal, and Re:collection, the last of which was done in collaboration with Ella Schultz. Notably for Re:framing, they handmade and altered 15 original designs and costumes for the thirteen dancers, including repurposed Capezio tights painstakingly hand-painted to mirror the human form.

November 2022 - March 2023

THE ARTIFICIAL WOMAN

In this new musical written and composed by Amy Gerstler and Steve Gunderson, directed by Kirsten Brandt, Sun portrays a lesbian restaurantaur and advocate for the artists of 1910s and 1920s Vienna, Austria. While being cast in this performance, they simultaneously assisted Pamela Rodriguez-Montero in the care and restoration of vintage garments to be used as the costumes for the production.

August 2022 - November 2022

ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD

Sun designed the costumes for this show in collaboration with Sierra Wypych and Vanessa Gottlieb. Sun's designs focused on the tragedians and their double-cast roles, featuring draped and manipulated muslin and vintage undergarments, corsetry and quick rigs, and original makeup designs inspired by vintage clowns.
